500 followers: gifts on Reels
Gifts are the lowest bar. Viewers buy Stars and send them on Reels they like, and each star is worth one cent to you, so 100 stars is $1. 1,000 followers: Creator Marketplace and brand deals
1,000 is the first threshold that can bring in real money. Creator Marketplace is where brands search for creators to partner with, and you need a public Creator or Business account with 1,000 or more followers to be listed. Brand messages from eligible businesses also go to a dedicated partnerships folder instead of your message requests.
You do not strictly need the Marketplace to do brand deals. Branded content has no follower minimum, and plenty of small accounts work with local businesses directly. 10,000 followers: subscriptions and Live badges
At 10,000 followers, Instagram lets fans pay you directly. Subscriptions are a monthly fee, set by you, for exclusive posts, Stories, Lives and a subscriber badge. Badges in Live let viewers tip in $0.99, $1.99 and $4.99 steps, up to $250 per Live, and are fully open to eligible creators in the US, while several other countries are still invite-only.
Both depend on people who already like you enough to pay. A few hundred engaged fans are worth more here than thousands who never open your Stories, so the 10,000 figure is an entry ticket, not a guarantee of income.
